Tommy Joe McClanahan, age 61, of Du Quoin, passed away at his home on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 after a brave battle with leukemia.
He was born Thursday, June 25, 1964 in Du Quoin, a son of the late William E. and Nancy C. (Cook) McClanahan. A lifelong resident of the area, Tommy spent his working years at Penn Aluminum in Murphysboro and Gilster Mary Lee in Steeleville. For 20 years, Tommy shared his life with Vicki Charles, and although they were not married, their bond was deep and abiding. Vicki was his partner, his friend, and his soulmate.
Tommy found great joy in the outdoors and in the company of those he loved. He cherished quality time with friends and family, and was a proud and loving grandfather, affectionately known as Pawpaw Tom to his grandchildren.
A grill master and cook, Tommy loved nothing more than sharing meals, especially his catalina burgers and bacon wrapped cabbage rolls. He freely offered his opinions and insights on politics and life and was a man of strong convictions, un-apologetically himself, and never afraid to speak his mind. While his blunt honesty could be intimidating, those who knew him understood that it was rooted in a deep love and passion for life.
Tommy's love was unconditional, and he gave it freely to those in his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
He is survived by two daughters- Nancy McClanahan of Crestview, Florida and Melanie (Tyler Becker) McClanahan of Elkville; life partner of twenty years- Vicki Charles of Du Quoin; four grandchildren- Allyson Chandler of Bourbonnais, Tonja Chandler of Bourbonnais, Jace Fennessey of Crestview, Florida, and Elias Edmonds of Crestview, Florida; two stepchildren- Amanda (Jeff) Chandler of Bourbonnais and Alan Charles of Carbondale; siblings- Carol (Jack) Walters of Du Quoin, Robert (Cathy) McClanahan of Dowell, snf John Patrick (Kathi) McClanahan of Johns Creek, Georgia; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved dog, Onyx.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister- Mary Ann McClanahan, brother- William "Billy" McClanahan, nephew- Brett McClanahan, and his precious dog- Benji.
At Tommy's request, no public services will be held at this time. The family will hold private services at a later date.
