(Terry) Tim Werner, aged 85, passed away at 3:15 pm on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Reflections Memory Care in Carterville, IL after a brief illness. He was born on January 6, 1939 in Watertown, WI to Dorothy and Howard Werner, now deceased, and was preceded in death by his wife, Karen (Davis) Werner, his siblings Michael Frank Werner and Jolie (Werner) Foelker.
He is survived by his children, Krista (Werner) son in law Samir Velarde, Eric and daughter in law Stacia (Smith) Werner as well as grandchildren, Daniel Velarde and Hope Werner.
Trained as a biologist, Tim was an avid outdoorsman and tireless advocate for conservation efforts first in New South Wales, Australia where he did site surveys for establishing a new national park and afterwards in Illinois, where he was employed at the Department of Natural Resources in Springfield for more than 30 years. He spent his free time with his family in the outdoors, as a hunter and fisherman and as well as canoeing, hiking and biking. He also enjoyed exploring the wider world with his wife and family and traveled extensively throughout his life including Europe, the Caribbean, Alaska and throughout the US, Australia and New Zealand.
He and his wife relocated to Southern Illinois in 2005 after retirement to be closer to his family and both became involved in local conservation efforts here: volunteering with the Cache River Wetland Center, the Sierra club and Audubon Society as well as with other initiatives benefitting the environment.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public services held at this time. Interment will be in Rock Lake Cemetery, Lake Mills, WI at a later date.
Memorials can be made in a forest of your choice through the Arbor Day Foundation Memorial Tree planting program or gifts may be made locally to the Friends of the Cache River Watershed, 8885 State Route 37 South, Cypress, IL 62923.
