Ronald Akins Obituary Ronald "Ronnie" Dean Akins, a beloved resident of the Liberty House in Marion, passed away at 1:08pm on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at Deaconess Hospital in Marion at the age of 87.
He was born Wednesday, September 22, 1937 in Herrin, Illinois, a son of Herman Otto and Annie (Wagley) Akins.
A bright and gentle soul, Ronnie was loved by m any. Despite the challenges he faced, Ronnie lived a life filled with joy, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the simple things. He had a special gift - his hands were incredibly talented. He loved to play with yarn, meticulously crafting balls that brought him immense pride. He also had a passion for creating something from nothing, making beautiful rugs out of discarded rags. His dexterity and patience were inspiring, and he could often be found making intricate balls out of rubber bands. A sports enthusiast, Ronnie was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved watching them play and would often cheer them on with enthusiasm. His other loves included numbers, solving crossword puzzles, and watching Westerns on TV. But most importantly, Ronnie loved people. His friends and staff at Liberty House were his family, and he cherished the time spent with them. They brought joy and companionship into his life, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kindness, creativity, and generous spirit will never be forgotten.
Ronnie is survived by his sister-in-laws- Betty Akins of Herrin and Brenda Akins of St. Genevieve; aunt- Nora Wagley of Herrin; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and the many beloved friends that became his family at Liberty House.
Memorial services to celebrate Ronnie's life, will be held at 11:00am on Friday, January 24, 2025 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Don Colson officiating. A time of visitation will be held from 10:00am until 11:00am on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Liberty House in Marion.
