Paul William Miller, age 76, of Du Quoin, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 17,
2026, at Carbondale Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950, in Du Quoin, the son of Robert William and Lois
(Neil) Miller. He married the love of his life, Carlene Frances (Bratten) Miller, at St. John's
United Church of Christ in Du Quoin on December 21, 1973.
Paul lived out a devoted lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ, which guided the way he loved
and served people. As a math teacher at Du Quoin High School, he was known for his ability to
reach students who struggled, making each one feel seen and valued. He coached many sports,
especially enjoying volleyball, and spent many summers helping manage the Du Quoin city pool.
In every role, Paul had a special gift for connecting with those in need of encouragement- students, players, neighbors, and family alike. After retiring from teaching, he continued coaching alongside his sons. He found great joy in supporting his grandchildren, faithfully attending their games, meets, recitals, and performances. His life was a reflection of his faith, marked by a deep love of worship and a steadfast commitment to his church and community.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Carlene Frances (Bratten) Miller of Du Quoin; three sons,
Seth William (Jessica) Miller of Westville, Isaac Olen (Ashley) Miller of Du Quoin, and Zachary
Eli (Julie) Miller of Metropolis; eleven grandchildren, Ella Lee, Carlee Lynelle, Leah Elise,
Zylee Elizabeth, Sophie Brynn (and fiancé Wilson Lodge), Carter Olen, Maddox William,
Chance Seth, Jaydon Isaac, Logann Patricia, and Trey William; two sisters, Karen (Neil) Myers
of Boyce, Virginia, and Jane (Tom) Pritchett of Du Quoin; one brother, Mark (Dee) Miller of
Pinckneyville; two brothers-in-law, Bruce Bratten and Steven (Melody) Bratten; along with
several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Larry Bratten.
A service for family, friends and community will be held on Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's
United Church of Christ in Du Quoin.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Du Quoin Education Foundation.
