Matthew Wesley Hardcastle, age 50, of Herrin, passed away Saturday, October 18, 2025 at his home in Crainville, after his brave battle with cancer.
He was born Saturday, January 4, 1975 in Herrin, a son of Charles D. and Shirley Dean (Alexander) Hardcastle. After his father's passing, Matt was raised the son of Shirley and Clyde E. Bailey. Matt served as the manager for AAA Safe Storage in Carterville.
Matthew was a one-of-a-kind individual, leaving behind a legacy of friendship, curiosity, and creativity. He was an avid reader and a passionate gamer, often immersing himself in games such as Dungeons and Dragons. His love for social gatherings was evident in the bonfires and get-togethers, where friends would come together to share stories and laughter.
Matthew's creativity knew no bounds, as he often found inspiration online to craft, cook or build unique projects. His intelligence and resourcefulness made him a jack-of-all-trades, and his blunt honesty was a trait that earned him respect.
Matthew lived life on his own terms, never craving the spotlight or material possessions. His quirky personality and unconventional approach to life made him a cherished friend and a truly unique individual. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law- Paul and Donna Hardcastle of Herrin; niece- Nichole Patterson of Herrin; nephew- Chad Hardcastle of Carterville; special friends including Brian Thornton of Omaha, Nebraska, Chris Heinzel of Carbondale, and Skip Kurtz of Makanda as well as a host of extended family and dear friends he cherished.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother, and step-father.
In honor of Matthew's request and in lieu of formal services, we invite you to remember Matthew in your own way - share a story, play a game, or simply take a moment to appreciate the little things.
