Lexie, beloved pet of Terry and Christina Melhorn, crossed to the Rainbow Bridge on March 13th, 2026.
Lexie was my Valentine's Day present in 2018. She was 3 years old. She was born in Texas. In 2017, Hurricane Harvey hit, and for reasons unknown, she was surrendered to a kill shelter. Lexie was saved by a sweet lady who helped rescue Yorkies and other small dogs. She arranged a pickup and caravan to get her to Illinois.
We were the chosen family to be able to give her a loving home!
She was a momma's girl from the start, but thought her dad was pretty great too! Lexie had a brother in this new family she had found. They became very close. Lexie was in charge of ALL the toys! Marley, being the good brother he was, just allowed her to take them. They loved chasing the squirrels together.
In January 2023, we lost Marley to lymphoma.
In June of 2023, we brought home a sister for Lexie. Heidi adored Lexie. Wherever Lexie was, Heidi was by her side.
The same year in August, Lexie was diagnosed with Cushing Disease. She was put on Vetoryl. After numerous bloodwork testing and tweaks to her dosage from her vet, she remained at a stable level of cortisol. Then, in June of 2025, she no longer tested positive for Cushings, which is not a curable disease. Then in July of 2025, she was being treated for an enlarged heart, which was the battle she could not win.
In her short 11 years she endured many battles. But she was a fighter, and fought until the end.
Lexie and her family would like to thank Dr. Kimberly Talley and the staff at Central Hospital for Animals. They gave Lexie the best care possible. Dr. Talley called her a "Fragile Flower".
Our home will not be the same without our sweet girl. Our hearts are broken. Lexie brought us much love and joy!
Run free my Lexie Lou!
Love, Mom, Dad, and Heidi
