Howard Thomas King

Howard Thomas King, age 77, of Du Quoin, passed away at 12:35 am on Friday, May 30, 2025 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Community Living Center in Marion.
Howard was born in Newport, Rhode Island on September 21, 1947, the son of Howard and Lyna (Hawkins) King. He married Charlotte A. Stump in Belleville in 1968. She preceded him in death on November 7, 2022.

Howard honorably served his country as a rifle specialist in the United State Marine Corps from 1966-1970, earning numerous distinctions for his bravery and selflessness. Howard's decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal, and the Republic Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Most notably, he was awarded two Purple Hearts - one for shrapnel wounds sustained and another for his heroic actions in saving the life of a higher-ranking officer. His service and sacrifices will never be forgotten. Howard's legacy is a testament to his courage, loyalty, and dedication to his country and fellow Marines. He will be deeply missed by his loved ones and the community that knew him.

Howard is survived by his daughter- Ellie King of Du Quoin; son- Zachary King of Du Quoin; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brother- Rick King, and sister- Sandra Stein.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife- Charlotte.

As per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. No services will be held at this time. Maxton-Rosado Funeral Home in Du Quoin is assisting the family with final arrangements.
