Gary Brent Wissinger, age 78, of Metropolis, formerly of Cairo, passed away peacefully at 11:11pm on Monday, May 4, 2026 at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.
He was born Tuesday, March 23, 1948 in Cairo, Illinois, a son of Frank and Miriam (Martin) Wissinger. He had worked for the Cairo School District as a janitor from 1988-2005.
Gary, a beloved father, friend, and die-hard Cardinals fan, left us with a legacy of love and joy.
Despite being born deaf, Gary lived a life full of passion and connection. He found community in sports, cheering on his beloved Cardinals and soaking up every game. TV was his window to the world, and he devoured shows and movies with infectious enthusiasm.
Gary's true happiness came from gathering with family and friends. He was a master of cards and board games, always up for a challenge and always smiling. His warm spirit and kind heart brought people together, transcending words and boundaries.
We'll remember Gary's beaming smile, his competitive spark, and his unwavering love. He may have been quiet in voice, but his presence spoke volumes. Rest in peace, Gary. Your memory will be a home run.
