Centralia- Dwight Eugene Smith, age 85, of Centralia, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Friday, September 8, 1939 in Kinmundy, Illinois, a son of Victor A. and Ada M. (Hanna) Smith. He married the love of his life, Susie McDaniel in Centralia on February 22, 1985. Together, they have shared more than forty years of marriage and precious memories.
Dwight was a devoted family man whose passing leaves a legacy of love, loyalty, and laughter. His family was the center of his universe, and he spent countless hours cherishing every moment with them. As a die-hard Cubs fan, Dwight could often be found cheering on his beloved team, his spirit and enthusiasm infectious to all around him. His sense of pride and duty also led him to serve in the National Guard, where he demonstrated courage, discipline, and a commitment to serving his country. But it was his grandchildren who brought Dwight the greatest joy. He adored them, and they brought out the best in him. His family was his rock, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Dwight's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and community. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife- Susie (McDaniel) Smith of Centralia; three daughters- Pamela Barrow of Mt. Vernon, Mandi (Gary) Glover of Richview, Amber (Tim) Hilton of Centralia; four grandchildren- Grady Glover, Alivia Glover, Lillie Hilton, and Riley Hilton; two sisters- Pat Gordon of Centralia and Fran Garrison and Lloyd Wert of Centralia; sister-in-law- Mary Ellen Smith of Centralia; brother-in laws- Bill Tockstein and Richard Jones; and in-laws Donna Wesling, Gary McDaniel, Chuck McDaniel, and Steve (Vickie) McDaniel.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers- Ron, Don, and Larry Smith, two sisters- Nancy Tockstein and Judy Jones, and three brother-in-laws- Darrell Gordon, Mike McDaniel, and Bob McDaniel.
No public services will be held at this time. Memorial contributions may be directed to BCMW Project Bread, a cause close to Dwight's heart.
