Darryl Smith Obituary

Darryl Antwone "D-Man" Smith, age 65, of Du Quoin, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2025 at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.

He was born Monday, November 9, 1959 in East St Louis, Illinois, a son of James Wesley and Rosetta (Smith) Thomas. He married Andrea Hope Davis in 2010. She preceded him in death on May 17, 2023.

D-man was a one-of-a-kind individual with an infectious laugh and a heart of gold. As a handyman, he worked tirelessly to provide for his loved ones. Darryl's passions went beyond his work. He loved fishing, keeping cars spotless, and even jamming out in a band - where everyday objects became instruments. His greatest joy came from his grandchildren, whom he delighted in playing with. Darryl's caring nature made him a beloved figure, and his ability to find humor in life's quirks left a lasting impact. A man of adventure and humor, D-Man lived life on his own terms. He was a gambler at heart, always up for a game of cards or a spin on the slots - even if just for a penny. One of D-Man's most distinctive traits was his affection for a certain overpass bridge, which he affectionately claimed as his own. He'd often be found patrolling its grounds, keeping a watchful eye on passersby, and occasionally, "chasing" those who dared to linger beneath it. His fun-loving spirit and ability to never take himself too seriously inspired those around him. Darryl's legacy will live on through the countless memories he created with family and friends. He'll be remembered for his larger-than-life personality and the joy he brought to those around him.

He is survived by his mother- Rosetta (Smith) Thomas of Du Quoin; son- Richard Tony Walker; son- DeMario (Jenny) Hilliard; son- Corey (Jamie) Walker; son- Chauncy (Erin) Hilliard; daughter- Shawnta Walker; daughter- Monica (Ricky) Ferguson; son- Trayvon (Amy) Johnson; daughter- Tamara Morgan; daughter- LaTonya (Robert) O'Bear; daughter- LaKeisha Johnson; son- Chaz (Kerri) Bland; son- Isaiah Doty; son- Brylon Doty; thirty-four grandchildren; brother- Lucious (Star) Smith; brother- Anthony (Wanda) Thomas; sister- Evelyn Thomas; sister- Lynda McPheters; sister- Birdie "Renee" Puckett; brother- Bernard (Doris) Thomas; sister- Carla (Von) Thomas; brother- Paul Thomas; sister-in-law- Jessica Saul; sister-in-law- Lenecia Jackson; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless friends.

He is preceded in death by his father- James; wife- Andrea Hope (Davis) Smith; sister- Gail Thomas; brother-in-law- Frankie Puckett; grandchildren- Ashanti Hilliard, April Hilliard, and Christian Hilliard and his special cousin- Terry "T-Mo" Morgan.
