Bruce Powell Obituary

Bruce Powell Obituary Bruce Alan Powell, age 61, of Johnston City, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at Herrin Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Bruce was born Saturday, August 31, 1963 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was raised a son of Leo Clyde and Ethel Sally (Lloyd) Powell. He married the love of his life, Sue Ann Gray in Johnston City on October 30, 1993. Together, they shared more than thirty-one years of marriage. He was a proud United States Air Force Veteran.

Though his rough exterior may have fooled some, those who knew him understood that he had a kind soul and a generosity that knew no bounds. Bruce was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back, no questions asked. He had a compassion for all living things, and his love for his family was unparalleled. He was a devoted husband, father, and friend, always putting the needs of others before his own. One of Bruce's most endearing qualities was his love for stray animals. During his shifts at Wal-Mart, he would often buy cans of cat food to feed the strays that wandered into the area. It was a small act of kindness that spoke volumes about his character. Bruce's family was his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He was a simple man with simple pleasures - going to work, coming home, and being surrounded by the people he loved. Though Bruce may be gone, his legacy of kindness, compassion, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife- Sue Ann Powell of Johnston City; children- Scott M. Gray of Johnston City, Kenneth B. Powell of Johnston City, and Jamie C. Hopwood and Beth Hammonds of Herrin; grandchildren- Allison Hughes, Kaylie Gray, Kaylyn Johnson, Kameron Strong, and Raylynn Gray; and his sister-in-law- Dee A. Pino of Johnston City.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents.

In honor of Bruce's wishes, no public services will be held at this time.
